The English Camps were held during the summer and winter school holidays in Baia Mare over a seven year period (1993 - 1999). Over 240 children attended each camp with volunteer teachers from the UK who taught and practised English in a 'fun way' with the young people. They were run with the support and involvement of the local education department and below are some images from the camps that were very successful.
The Workshop Project is the main workplace scheme sponsored by the MYPT. It has been running since 1993, providing opportunities for young people in Baia Mare to learn woodworking skills. The Workshop, located just outside Baia Mare, operates on a non-profit basis making high quality furniture and toys for children's homes throughout Romania. For further information on the Workshop Project, please see the Projects page. Below are selected images from the Workshop and some of the homes where furniture has been produced and installed. MYPT and the Workshop thanks H&HC for their continued support. Volunteers from the UK and elsewhere regularly visit the Workshop on organised work projects.
Many of the state institutions for children in Romania are going through radical change for the better, with many being closed completely. In Maramures County, Hope & Homes for Children (H&HC) have been, and continue to be, behind the reforms and closures. In their place, smaller family unit homes have replaced the large institutions where the young people had little love or attention. H&HC are extending their childcare reforms to other counties in Romania. Below are some images of the state institutions of the past.
Here are a collection of images of Baia Mare, Maramures and Romania. It is a beautiful country in terms of contrasting scenery, people, customs & traditions - the latter particularly prevalent in Maramures.
